

Chi-sheng (“Bob”) Liu, 79, of San Diego passed away peacefully on April 15, 2014. Born in Shandong Province, China on November 1, 1934, he graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University. He went on to receive an MS at West Virginia University, and a PhD from University of Illinois. He married Ling-Hwa (Emma) Shieh in 1960.
Bob was a highly respected laser physicist, with many awards and honors throughout his career, including the prestigious David Sarnoff Fellowship from the Radio Corporation of America. His distinguished career encompassed patents, inventions, and projects (some still classified) that ranged from nuclear missile defense, subsurface submarine communications, exotic lighting systems, to the first FDA-approved laser for use in hair removal. His legacy lives on in the many scientists he had partnered with and mentored over the years.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Emma, his son Evan (Donna), and daughters Ellen (Sheldon) and Laura (Ken). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, and 1 great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley at 11am on May 24. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in his memory to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
