Clara Paula Andrade
June 22, 1931 – January 23, 2019
Clara Paula Andrade was born on June 22, 1931, in Brooklyn, NY, and died on January 23, 2019, in San Diego, CA.
Her father, Crispin, and mother, Narciza, had three daughters--Mary, the oldest (1929-2018), Clara, and Emilia (1932-1997). The family moved to San Diego from the east coast in 1935, and Clara graduated from San Diego High School in 1952.
She started work in the family-owned grocery store--Andrade's Market, in Point Loma--in 1952, and two years later the store was relocated to the North Park area, and was re-named Chris' Market (which is still its name to this day), where the family continued to live and work for over 60 years.
Clara continued to work in the butcher shop part of the grocery store, assisting her father with his duties, as well as with her sister Emilia, and mother, in theirs. The family lived about a block from the store, and devoted very long hours of work there. After the deaths of Clara's mother, in 1973, and father, in 1975, the two sisters continued to run the grocery store, and continued to work there until 1990, when they sold the store. When her sister Emilia died in 1997, Clara continued to live in their North Park home.
Clara attended church at St. Patrick's in North Park, with her sister Mary, for many years, from 1997 to about 2013. She and her sister were also members of the Doll Collectors of North Park, and regularly went to their meetings. Clara assisted in the care of her aging sister Mary, and brother-in-law Jose, from 2014 until Jose's death in May, 2017, and Mary's in March 2018.
A few of Clara's qualities stand out: her great devotion to family, her dedication to her work in the family grocery store, loyalty to all of her family. Her true and honest kindness, and genuine respect and love to all people, will be greatly missed.
Clara is survived by her two nephews--Joe Costa, of San Diego, CA, John Costa, of Phoenix, AZ, and John's two children--Jason, 23, and Angela, 18.
