Daniel Lee Covill September 17, 1930 -- September 23, 2017 San Diego.
Dan died peacefully at home, after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 87. He kept his sense of humor until the end. He was born in Boston, MA and moved to Bedford, NH at a young age. He was loved by his childhood friend and wife of 63 years, retired special education teacher Marjorie "Mardi" Covill (née Miltimore).
Daniel is survived by his wife, Mardi, daughter Laurie Covill and sons Lee (Lorraine Wrege-Covill) and Stuart (partner Lynn O'Neill); four grandchildren, Madolyn Covill, Trevor Walker, Natalie Covill and Cassandra Covill, and two brothers, R. Wade Covill, MD (Carol) of Columbia Falls MT, and William Covill of Kalispell MT.
Daniel was a computer programming pioneer, who studied engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, then enlisted in the Army in 1948. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant of a supply company while stationed in Germany, and participated in the Berlin Airlift. His experiences in Germany led to a love of travel, and he and Mardi enjoyed many overseas vacations together.
After the Army, in the 1950s, Dan began working for System Development Corp. In the 1960s and ‘70s his computer programming career took him and the family all over the country, where he worked for the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company, the SAGE project, Hughes Aircraft, Burroughs, University of Wisconsin at Madison, Chrysler, UCSD and Data Resources Inc. In 1980 he settled permanently in San Diego and started a successful computer consulting company, from which he eventually retired. He stayed active in computing and was an honorary lifetime member of the Seniors Computing Group. Dan's first love was automobiles. He was active in the San Diego chapter of the BMWCCA and attended BMW driving schools at the Nürburgring in Germany, later serving as an instructor at BMW club driving schools in California.
Dan Covill and his wife Mardi are forever grateful for the expert care given by Dr. Januario Castro of the CLL Research Consortium and Dr. Brian First of the Sharp Senior Center.
Daniel will be buried at Miramar National Cemetery on October 4, 2017.
