Born on November 22, 1942, in the village of Valtetsi, Greece, Dean grew up with a deep pride in his heritage. In his early 20s, he made the brave decision to move to the United States. He first settled in Chicago, where he got his start in the restaurant industry and discovered a lifelong passion for hospitality.
In 1982, Dean moved to San Diego and later bought California Cuisine. Alongside his wife, Stella, he poured his heart into the restaurant, running it successfully for 25 years. California Cuisine became a cornerstone of his life. He took incredible pride in the business, creating a space where great food, community, and genuine warmth came together. Dean was known for his legendary generosity, always ready with a helping hand.
After retiring, Dean frequently returned to his roots. He loved traveling back to Greece, spending time in Valtetsi and catching up with family and friends. He was a proud Greek, but an even prouder Valtetsiouti, forever bound to the land where he was raised.
Above all, Dean’s greatest joy was his family. He loved nothing more than opening his home to loved ones, filling the house with laughter and noise. An extraordinary cook, he took deep pride in preparing massive, unforgettable meals that brought everyone he loved around the same table.
Dean also loved the outdoors. He was a passionate gardener who grew a vibrant backyard full of fresh fruits and vegetables. On weekends, he stayed loyal to his Chicago roots, cheering on the Cubs and spending his Sundays watching football. He also loved the camaraderie of his monthly poker games and spent many sunny days at the Del Mar Racetrack with his buddies. His generous spirit, his incredible cooking, and his fierce love for his family will be deeply missed.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, George and Evangelia Kalamaras; his brother, Anastasios Kalamaras; and his sisters, Vasiliki Margia and Katerina Dokos.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Stella Kalamaras; his sons, John Kalamaras and George Kalamaras; his daughter-in-law, Nancy Kalamaras; and his grandchildren, Kosta and Penelope Kalamaras, who were his absolute pride and joy. He also leaves behind his siblings, Pope Mozomenos, Jim Kalamaras, Maria Marioulas, and Panos Kalamaras, along with sister-in-law Mary Pappas, Athena Lynde, Vicki Anastasopoulos and brother-in-law Nick Anastsopoulos plus many loved nieces, nephews, God children, extended family members, and close friends.
May his memory be eternal.
