Dolores E. Moffett, a longtime resident of Allied Gardens since the middle 50s, passed early the morning of July 16, 2013, after a month of hospitalization and nursing care. Small in stature, she nevertheless created a big impression with others who got to know her over the years. She had many friends and numerous acquaintances who knew the quiet, friendly lady who lived in the neighborhood.
Life never seemed easy for her as a member of the "Greatest Generation". Born and raised in Minnesota, she lived through the Great Depression and then met her future husband, a United States Marine, while both were working in the Twin Cities. Following him out to San Diego, they got married just before the onset of World War II. As with others with similar situations, there were some difficult years of separation and anxiety.
After the retirement of her husband from the service, they soon bought a house in the community of Allied Gardens. For almost twenty years they enjoyed participating in such sports as bowling and playing golf and working with kids in Little League and Pony League baseball. In 1974, Dolores lost her husband of 33 years to cancer. She herself had suffered a bout with cancer.
For Almost 40 years, Dolores participated on bowling teams and golf links. She also loved to play with bridge groups. Although she was a soft spoken lady, she did have a strong, independent spirit about her. And she was a good listener who did not whine or complain about things or people. She never remarried.
To her family, which was so important, as well as her Faith, she was the family matriarch who sought to keep the members together and she encouraged family celebrations of birthdays at various restaurants and family reunions on religious holidays at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas in the home.
Dolores is survived by her sons, James and Robert, along with their respective wives Angie and Paula. She is also survived by granddaughters Rebecca Lopez (and husband, Louie) and Marleen Solano (and husband, Benjamin). Finally, she leaves 5 great-grandchildren, Miranda, Joseph, Benji, Noah and Sofia. All of the Family have a sense of loss, but know that "Grandma Dodo's " spirit and influence will have an effect on them until they join her again in the world to come.
As a founding parishioner of the church of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, services are planned there on Monday, July 22, 2013, with a Rosary at 10:00 AM. A Mass at 10:30 A.M. with close family friend Father Devdas, officiating, followed by a burial services at Holy Cross Cemetery.
