In the autumn of 1991 we moved from Illinois to California.  As we took a walk around our new neighborhood and arrived back to look at the home that we were eager to soon occupy, we were greeted by our new neighbor Don.  Over the years Don  shared many wonderful stories with us, and we helped each other as good neighbors should.  He still enjoyed serving the County  even after his retirement, and shared interesting weather information with us.   We talked about vehicles he used to have - his old "lead sled" Mercury, the Jeepster, the Corvette, and the story of how he acquired the Miata for Jean paying a premium because it was one of the first to be delivered.  He shared stories about his work at the "Frank the Trainman"  store, his passion for trains and his favorite railroad "The Great Northern," and shared model train and model car catalogues for me to peruse.  I talked about how my dad worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad and so one day Don gave me an old railroad spike.  When I worked for the Oceanside Police Don and Jean donated stuffed animals to comfort children in need.   We saw neighbors come and go, and remained perhaps the last original residents.    Don served the neighborhood not only as an association board member, but as a neighborhood representative.  Soon after we moved in he motivated us to go to city council to voice our opinions on the problems with plans for the shopping center that was going up across the street.   And of course for all of those years Don and Jean would have a friendly Pomeranian or two by their side.  Despite the physical challenges that age increasingly presented him, Don still made it a point to be mobile and see what was going on in the neighborhood.  I will miss his stopping over to say "hi" or share a story.  I thank his family for making a nice memorable graveside service for him in a pleasant location, and will make it a point to stop over there and visit with him from time to time. Don was a wonderful father-in-law and grandpa. He always took the time to relate to the kids and I still hear his voice giving me his sage advice and words of wisdom. Don is the kind of person others aspire to be like. He was a hard worker. He always had a smile for everyone and he never let things keep him down. He made friends wherever he went and could relate to everyone young or old.  He will be missed by many.   Rest is peace Don,. I love you alway.
