My tribute to you

They say you can tell a lot about a person by how they play a game of golf. For dad, it wasn’t just a hobby; it was how he moved through his day. If you spent any time with him, you probably saw it—that phantom swing. He’d be standing in the kitchen or the middle of a conversation, or anywhere with free space, and his hands would find that grip and he’d follow through on a drive only he could see. He was always practicing, always refining, always looking for that perfect shot.

I’ll be honest: Dad and I didn't always have a smooth fairway between us. We were both stubborn toward each other, and we spent a lot of time butting heads. Because of that, I thought I was prepared for this day. I thought that the distance we had would act as a shield.

But then I received the message that changed everything. I looked at my phone and read these words from my brother: “Ka! Call me back. Time check it’s midnight there, Dad’s gone.” In that moment, the shield didn't just crack; it vanished. I felt crushed. I realized that the reason we clashed so often was because we were cut from the same cloth. You don't fight that hard with someone unless they matter to you. The weakness I felt in my legs and the shaking in my hands was the proof of a bond that didn't need to be perfect to be powerful. It may be too late to show you personally because you won't be here to see it, but I promise that from now on, I’ll make the effort that I never was able to show you. I’ll talk to you and say more than just “Happy Birthday” yearly. I’ll make it a part of my day or week to talk to you because I know you will still hear me.

Uncle Eddie was my favorite uncle growing up. He was my dad’s best friend. He always had a smile on his face and was always so kind. You will forever be in my memories. Rest in Peace, Uncle.
