When Doctor Ned walked into a room, any room, he lit it up, with his electric personality that was big and boisterous and just as kind and caring.
In a devastating loss felt in so many circles of his life’s closest friends, long-time patients, and fond acquaintances, Dr. Ned Chambers is no longer with us.
Doctor Ned died March 5 at age 71 after suffering a fatal brain injury a few days after an accident while playing pickleball, his new-found favorite sport, at the San Diego Yacht Club.
A family physician with offices (Shelter Island Medical Group) on Rosecrans Street for more than 40 years, he was a native San Diegan who attended Loma Portal Elementary, Collier (now Correia) Junior High, and Point Loma High as a member of the Class of ’69.
Doctor Ned graduated from Stanford University, where he played football on a full scholarship. Later, he earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.
His heart belonged to his wife of 38 years, fellow PLHS grad Annie DesGranges, their sons Evan (29) and Alec (26), his many friends and patients throughout the Peninsula, and, of course, their pet cockapoo, Rocky.
Doctor Ned’s legacy will continue to thrive with his many heartbroken friends who loved him and already miss him more than any of us could possibly say.
The Ned Chambers Memorial Scholarship with the theme of Scholar-Athlete-Leader has been established with the Point Loma High School Alumni Association.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.merkleymitchell.com for the Chambers family.
