Edward R. Mendoza March 12, 1932 - May 30, 2018 San Diego Born to Alexander and Angelina Mendoza, native San Diegans, he graduated San Diego High School in 1949, graduated San Diego State College with a degree in Mathematics in 1953, and member Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Married Margaret Brady of York, PA, in 1954 and was married for 53 years before Margaret's passing in 2007. Ed served 5 years in the United States Navy aboard the USS Bayfield, USS San Bernardino and served out his final year as an instructor at the San Diego Naval Station reaching the rank of Lieutenant. He began his 33-year career with the City of San Diego as an analyst in the budget office, quickly advancing to Superintendent of Sanitation, Building and Street Maintenance, and served as Director of Parks and Recreation before retiring in 1991. In retirement, he and Margaret traveled throughout the US and Canada but were happiest spending time with their 9 grandchildren. "FaFa," as he was affectionately referred to, provided unconditional love and support to all of them. He taught them life lessons, always promoting and celebrating their education, dreams and accomplishments, 9 college graduates and 3 with master's degrees. Whether on a lunch or dinner date, golf outing, family celebration, or a Disney cruise, FaFa was always there listening, teaching, and most importantly making them laugh. Ed was witty, had a profound sense of humor, and was a great story teller. His mostly corny jokes and sayings always kept everyone around him laughing. He was an avid reader who had a wealth of knowledge for everything especially history, politics, and current events. He had an immense love for family and friends, along with a deep devotion to his Catholic faith. He lived his life as an example to all. He will be missed and never forgotten. He is survived by 4 children: Reina (Oscar) Martinez, Jan (Gary) Schulte, Eddie (Kathy) Mendoza, and Monica (Javier) Mendoza; 9 grandchildren: Ashley, Alex, Christopher, Kyle, Taylor, Emma, Devin, Ryan, and Brady; and 4 great-grandchildren: Adeline, Brooks, Easton, and Lachlan.
