Born in San Diego on March 27, 1953, to Edwin and Francine Hoffman, Elyse was vibrant, independent, funny, and wholly herself. She lived life on her own terms, never took much too seriously, and was well known — and loved — for her stubborn streak and colorful way of moving through the world.
A San Diego native through and through, Elyse earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from National University after spending many years as a manicurist, where her warmth, wit, accepting nature, and gift for conversation made lasting impressions on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She was easy to talk to, approachable to all, and had a way of making people feel comfortable, understood, and welcome.
She loved classic rock and live concerts, traveling and playing golf with her forever fiancé, Gary Rich, and the simple joy of being at home with the people and pets she loved. She brought laughter easily and had a way of making life feel a little lighter.
Above all, Elyse was a devoted mother to Merissa Garcia and proudly wore one of her favorite titles — Frenchie Grandma. She adored every puppy she met, loved dogs deeply, and poured so much joy into that role.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Francine Hoffman; her former husband, Daniel Garcia; and her brother, Mark Hoffman. She is survived by many loved ones and dear friends who will carry her memory forward.
In her final days, Elyse shared words her family will treasure forever: “I had a wonderful life.” Those who knew her know how true that was.
A private family urn burial will be held, followed by a Celebration of Life at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local animal rescue in Elyse’s honor.
She was deeply loved and will be deeply missed.
