Emmett Jerome Sharkey

Emmett Jerome Sharkey was born in New York City on December 21, l939, to Emmett and Helen Sharkey. He had three sisters, Mary, Margaret, and Patricia. He grew up in a happy and loving Irish Catholic family. He went to Chaminade High School in New York, and then on to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Next was Northwestern University Medical School in Evanston, Illinois. His internship was at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. The day after his very last day of medical school, he married a registered nurse who he met while they were both at Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She is Kathleen Therese Vertin Sharkey, and it was on June 14th, l965, FLAG DAY at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Minnesota. Three sons and one daughter have been born to them, Michael, Joseph, Mariah, and John.

Michael, first son, married Sarah Borden Sharkey, and is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin. Their children are Emmett Joseph, John Firman, Kathleen Elizabeth, Joseph Michael, and Baby Tommy who is in Heaven.

Joseph, second son, married Nancy Frabotta Sharkey, and is a Professor of Literature and Writing at the University of Washington. Their children are Anthony Joseph, Roma Mariah, and Sol Vincent.

Mariah, THE DAUGHTER, married Kevin Brumund, and she is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Their children are Zephyr Sharkey, Sharkey Kathleen, and London Thomas.

John, third son, married Leigh Eskovitz Sharkey, and he is an actor and an assistant director in Hollywood. Their daughter is Violet Rose. (One of Emmett's and Kathleen's main joys in life is that John has played the part of Jesus in nine different productions.)

Emmett's and Kathleen's lives have been blessed with such joy, usually focused on all these wonderful families. And MEDICINE.......which challenged Kathleen as to who his truest love really was! He did over five thousand surgeries at Sutter North Medical, in Yuba City, California, and was a wonderful doctor who the whole town knew and loved. We both still thank God for all his blessings.......even though our Patriarch has "Gone North", and is with God.
