Sam was born in Joplin Missouri in 1928, was honorably discharged from the navy in 1947 and graduated at University of Missouri with a BSEE degree in 1951. He was married to Carmen Riess in 1953, and moved to San Diego in 1954. He chose Point Loma because, “I felt there would always be fresh air between the bay and the ocean.” His son, Michael, born in 1955 was tragically killed in a car accident at the age of six.
He worked for the USN Underwater Sound Lab., Convair, and, was the Director of Research for Electro Instruments, before hiring on at Cubic Corporation as Electrical Engineer in 1957 to 1965, when he took early retirement and began private consulting.
Sam will be remembered for his love of science, engineering and the challenge of an unsolvable problem. He is survived by his niece. He was a complex, intelligent, remarkable man and he will be sorely missed.
