

Felipe Siñel Cataquiz passed to Eternal Life on February 10, 2023. He will be remembered as a faithful Catholic, loving husband, loving and guiding father, and patriot to his adopted country the United States of America. He was born on July 8, 1931 to Eugenio DeVilla Cataquiz and Beata Casidsid Siñel in Sampa-San Luis, Batangas, Philippines. He spent happy early years in Sampa-San Luis, Batangas. He later spent the rest of his childhood and early adult years in the Visayan province of Aklan where his mother was from. As a youth during World War II, he was part of the resistance efforts against the Japanese by carrying food and supplies to guerrilla strongholds in the mountains. He worked in various capacities in Manila, the Visayas, Mindanao and as an instructor in office skills in Batangas. He married Ursula Garcia Dayanghirang in 1957. In 1960 he brought his wife and two daughters to the United States where three sons were born.
He began his career in the Navy as a Steward later changing his rating to Yeoman and then to Personnelman. His career lasted 22 years which included deployments to Vietnam and duty as a Command Career Counselor, retiring as a Personnelman Chief Petty Officer. After retirement from the U.S. Navy, he returned briefly to the Philippines with his family to expose his children to the culture of their ancestors. He re-established his family in Mira Mesa in the mid 80s and worked a second career in Civil Service with Personnel Support Detachment, San Diego as an Educational Services Officer from which he retired in the mid 90s. He received a Civilian Meritorious Service Medal.
Felipe enjoyed fishing, reading, cooking (specifically barbecuing), keeping up with his grandchildren and great grandson. He was a learned man with a degree in Political Science and exemplary command of the written and spoken English language. He lived by the code of humility, hard work, self help, that every man is responsible for himself with the help of God Almighty, patriotism, kindness and generosity to all. He taught his children well and instilled these qualities in them.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Ursula Dayanghirang Cataquiz; Children: Ruth Cataquiz Statler (Mark), Doris D. Cataquiz, MD, MSGT Felipe Cataquiz, Jr. USAF Ret., Eugene Cataquiz III, DDS (Rebecca) and Emmanuel D. Cataquiz; Grandchildren: Catherine Statler Misleh (Robert), Forrest M. Statler, Barrett A. Statler, Felipe V. Cataquiz, III, Rachel Anne Cataquiz, Lorenzo Cataquiz, Isabella Cataquiz and great grandson Basil R. Misleh.
Eternal Rest Grant unto you dear husband and father. May God’s Perpetual Light shine upon you. You are loved very much and sorely missed. Rest in Peace and we know we will be united again in God’s time.
Vigil Service will be at El Camino Memorial in Sorrento Valley on March 1, 2023 at 4-8PM. Mass of Resurrection will at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Mira Mesa on March 2, 2023 at 10AM with burial to follow at the Miramar National Cemetery at 12:45PM.
