FERNANDO G. MONREAL
JULY 30, 1955 – JUNE 8, 2014
On June 8, 2014, our beloved husband, father, family member and friend, Fernando “Shamu” Monreal was called home to be with our Lord.
A celebration of life service will be held at Christ Community Church, 572 Orange Avenue, El Centro, CA 92243, at 10:00am, on Friday, June 20, 2014. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 895 Scaroni Road, Calexico, CA 92231.
Fernando was born on July 30, 1955 in Calexico, CA to Raul and Concepcion Monreal and became the little brother of Raul “Bobby” Monreal. Fernando graduated from Calexico High School in 1974 and continued his education at Imperial Valley College, where he studied criminal justice.
Fernando served his community by helping coach pop warner football and also by working in various roles at: the Calexico Police Department, Imperial County Sheriff Department, El Centro Regional Medical Center, and El Centro Police Department. He also helped his father with the family business, Monreal Trucking.
On November 6, 1982 he married the love of his life, Carmen Garcia. He was blessed in 1990 with his son, Steven Anthony.
In the early 90’s Fernando’s wife suffered a severe back injury forcing her to make chronic chiropractic visits to help calm her pain, and because of this Fernando decided to go to school and become a massage therapist to help ease his wife’s pain. This also led to him founding his own business, Have Hands Will Travel, which brought comfort to people all across the south west region through relief of pain and stress.
Fernando enjoyed spending time with family and friends sharing his humor and smile. His words of encouragement and sage advice helped many of his friends and family members, lifting their spirits and forever having a place in their hearts. Although he only had one son, he was a father figure to many. His passion for music led him to be a great supporter of the Great Spartan Band, especially the drum line. His hobbies included reading, particularly military history, watching the San Diego Chargers, golfing, traveling, and camping in Yosemite National Park, but before everything else he loved and served God.
Fernando was preceded in death by his father Raul, his mother Concepcion, and his brother “Bobby.”
Fernando is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Carmen G. Monreal, his son Steven Anthony Monreal, his parents-in-law Felipe and Ramona Garcia, loving brothers-in-law George, Fernando, Arturo, and Felipe (who was like a son); nieces Rocio Alcaraz, Christianne Garcia, Barbarah Monreal, Aridesmi Garcia; nephew Raul Monreal; and his loving pup, Hershey.
Sharing his love for God, he often encouraged others to exercise their faith by walking with God and to P.U.S.H. – Pray Until Something Happens.
