Fortunato Elefante Fontimayor

FORTUNATO E. FONTIMAYOR April 17, 1927 – April 18, 2021 Also known as “Atong” Fortunato E. Fontimayor of San Diego, California USA also known to everyone as “Atong” or “Grandpa Atong” to his grandchildren, passed away surrounded by loved ones on April 18th, 2021 at exactly 4:18 pm at the age of 94 after a difficult battle with angiosarcoma skin cancer and (COPD) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Fortunato was born on April 17th, 1927 to the late Cirilo Febrero Fontimayor and the late Maria Fuertes Elefante in San Narciso, Zambales, Philippines. Fortunato was predeceased by his father, mother, his eldest brother Alfredo Sr, and his youngest brother Amor. He is survived by his beloved wife Rosalina Villanueva Nafarrete, his 7 children with their wife/husband: Antonio, Roly, Arlene F. Custodio, Belen F. Villarin, Adora F. Balleser, Noel, Gene, and his 14 Grandchildren, their wife/husband and 5 Beautiful Great Grandchildren. He also survived by his three siblings Crestita Enriquez, Virginia Del Lamas both resides in the Philippines and his brother Conrado in Maryland USA. With his loved and desire to join the U.S. Military, together with his cousin and best buddy, the late Virgilio “Velen” Fontimayor, decided to leave without finishing high school and travelled to Subic with the high hope of being accepted in the US Navy. And on August 10th, 1945, their dreamed finally fulfilled and signed their first enlistment five days before Emperor Hirohito of Japan announced their surrender ending World War II on August 15, 1945 and the formal surrender took place on the deck of battleship USS Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay, Japan on September 2, 1945 at 9:00 am Pacific Time. After retiring 20 years from Naval service together with his fellow retirees from San Narciso, went back and finished high school at Zambales Academy and continued higher education at Magsaysay Memorial College. With his devotion and love of family, Fortunato and his so-called best buddy “Velen” decided to return to US to apply for their US Citizenship. This will be their second sacrifice leaving their family in the Philippines to give both their family a better life. And as a result of their sacrifices, the fruit of their labor is now enjoying three to four generations of their family the “American Dream”. A loving husband, father, grandfather of 14 and great grandfather of 5. Fortunato Fontimayor lived a full and blessed life. The simplest pleasure in life brought many joyous memories and blessings to Fortunato. He lived playing mahjong, enjoyed cooking for his 7 kids and 14 grandchildren, and watching old western shows to pass the time. Fortunato’s pleasant and cheerful personality will certainly be missed”. Anyone who knew Fortunato knew that he was the most loving father and spouse a family could ask for.

Grandpa, because of your sacrifice, you have made the lives of your siblings, wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren better. Thank you for staying so strong for your loved ones, even on your death bed. The strength you demonstrated and your will to survive is empowering.
