Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and dear friend Fred Ludwig, ‘Coach Ludwigʼ, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2018. Fred was known and loved throughout the Point Loma community where he lived for over seven decades. He will be deeply missed: his warmth, counsel, open heart, generosity, humility, steadfastness and humor characterized his life of eighty-seven years. Frederick E. Ludwig was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, to a prominent southern family on October 3, 1930. His parents, Lucille and Thomas May Ludwig moved their family to Point Loma in 1935 to join many other Ludwigs who had migrated earlier to San Diego. During his junior year of high school Fred received a scholarship to St. Andrews school in Tennessee then returned to finish high school in 1948 at Hoover High and onto San Diego State. He enlisted in the US Army along with a close PL buddy and served in Korea and finished the reserves as Second Lieutenant. He returned to State and instantly fell in love with a Greek beauty, JoAnna Chaknias, whom he wed in 1955; soon after both completed their degrees at UCLA and USC, respectively. They returned to Point Loma and began their family in 1957, had three daughters: Lanna, Janelle, Alisa and one son Rick. Fred, a devoted family man, enjoyed teaching his children foreign languages, sports, appreciation of nature and devotion to prayer. He valued his career as a teacher, coach and counselor with San Diego City School District for twenty-seven years; his twelve years at Pt. Loma High were highlights of personal and coaching victories and fostered many lifelong friendships. His acumen at business allowed him to retire early which he spent traveling with Joanna, visiting grandchildren, volunteering as a coach, ministering in
prisons, joining mission trips to Brazil, and serving The Living Springs Church.
Fred was predeceased by Joanna, his wife of sixty- one years, and daughter-in- law Paula Flanagan Ludwig in 2013. He is survived by his four children, Lanna Cramer, Janelle Helms, Alisa Ludwig, Rick Ludwig and in-laws: Henry, David, Kathy, ; grandchildren, Lauren, Carol
Anne, Dianna, Jacqueline, Daniel, Connor, Audrey; great-grandchildren Rory, Luke, Ari, Michael, Jordan, brother Bill Ludwig and sister-in-laws Ricki Cokas, Panoria Foreman and thirty- one nieces and nephews.
Now our dear and precious Fred can run quickly and talk long hours with all the faithful that
have gone before him into eternal life!
2 Timothy 4: 7-9
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in
store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to
me on that day- and no only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
