Gary Chadwick Tillman, known lovingly to family and friends as Chad, passed away on June 11, 2026, in Fallbrook, California, at the age of 54. His life ended as it was lived, in service to others, as he lost his life while coming to the aid of a stranger in need.
Born on March 29, 1972, in Savannah, Georgia, Chad grew up with a spirit of duty and compassion that would define every chapter of his life. After completing high school, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, where he served with honor and distinction for twelve years. His time in the Marines instilled in him discipline, loyalty, and selflessness that he carried long after his service ended.
Following his military career, Chad found his next calling behind the wheel as a truck driver, a profession that suited his love of big rigs and the open road. He took great pride in his work and in providing for his family. When he was not on the road, Chad could often be found spending time with his wife and cheering on his beloved San Diego Padres, a passion he shared enthusiastically with those around him.
Above all else, Chad was a devoted husband and a loving father. His family was the center of his world, and he poured his heart into every moment spent with them. Those who knew him best will remember his warmth, his generosity, and his unwavering commitment to the people he loved.
Chad is survived by his wife, Stephanie Tillman; his daughters, Cassie Hawley (Noah Hawley), Callie Tillman, and Claire Tillman; his stepdaughter, Sydney Pilgrim; his granddaughters, Rylee Hawley and Ellie Hawley; his mother, Marilyn Faulkner; and his brother, Brian Tillman. He was preceded in death by his father, Gary Tillman.
Chad's family takes comfort in the knowledge that he now rests in the arms of his Lord and Savior, and that his final act on this earth reflected the kind of man he truly was: one who gave of himself so that others might be safe.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held on June 24, 2026, at 2:15 p.m. at Miramar National Cemetery. All who knew and loved Chad are welcome to attend and celebrate a life defined by courage, love, and sacrifice.
