Geoffrey Matthew Huk

August 7, 1962November 9, 2018

Geoffrey M. Huk, age 56, passed away November 9, 2018 at his home in Valley Center, CA. He was born on August 7,1962, the youngest of three children, to Michael Sr. and Geraldine Huk in Detroit, MI. The family soon relocated to Elma, NY, where Geoffrey and his siblings grew up. He graduated from Iroquois Central High School in 1980 and then attended Erie Community College, where he earned his Associate’s Degree, and also served as a volunteer firefighter in the Elma Volunteer Fire Company.

Geoffrey enlisted in the United States Navy in April 1988 as an aircraft electrician and spent his career stationed primarily at North Island Naval Base in San Diego. He was a veteran of the Persian Gulf War, where he fought bravely alongside Navy Seals in multiple ground combat situations, and later completed six tours of sea duty in the Western Pacific. He earned many medals and awards in his 22 years of service including Navy/Marine Corps Commendation and Achievement Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Kuwait Liberation Medal. He retired at the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8) in April 2010 and was discharged with full honors.

After retiring, he continued to fulfill a commitment to serve, working as a contractor for General Atomics and deploying abroad for multiple months each year. He was between deployments at the time of his death.

Geoffrey was an avid outdoorsman and created so many fond memories with friends and family while camping and off-roading in his Jeep in the Borrego Desert, outside of Borrego Springs, CA. He was a skilled mechanic and electrician, well-known for his love of working on cars and projects around his home. He loved watching movies like Highlander and Lord of the Rings, listening to the music of Pink Floyd, Metallica, and Queen, and watching a starry night sky. And he could never turn down a bowl of Panang curry with a Thai iced tea.

Geoffrey is preceded in death by his parents. He is the beloved father of five children: Leah Huk (husband Shawn Griffith), Katie Huk, Amanda Huk, Daniel Ladd (wife Jaiden Hamilton), and Rachel Huk. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Jaidyn Huk and Sawyer Griffith, as well as his siblings, Michael Huk Jr. and Monica Leoffler (née Huk).

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 11th. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on the USS Midway Museum in downtown San Diego, followed by a graveside interment service with full military honors the same day at 1:00 p.m. at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr, San Diego, CA 92122.

I met Geoff in 2001 when I checked aboard "CONNIE". We hit it off immediately and spent the next few years making crazy memories and having fun. We lived in the gym and he loved working out. Geoff was as real as they come. What you saw, was what he was. His smile was infectious, and he could always make what seemed bad, good again. Geoff cared more for other people than he did himself. If Geoff loved you, you knew it. One of MANY memories with Geoff, was when he got us lost in Australia. After two hours of walking we ended up in a neighborhood. When we asked a lady to help us out she flipped the map around and said, "Hunny your off the map way down here". Turns out Geoff had the map upside down, lol. A month later we were in the "sandbox". We thought it would be a good idea to get some transportation. So we proceeded to borrow some camels. We learned quick that's frowned upon. We were detained for a spell, guess they thought we were nuts and let us go. Lol. We had a warm beer and a fat cigar and laughed our butts off. I can still hear him singing "Roxanne" in the showers from the Eddie Murphy movie 48 hours and that goofy grin and him saying "what"? After you asked him what the heck he was doing. (I'm laughing with a tears in my eyes as I am writing this). We always talked about family, his was everything to him. When we talked about "Beepers" while we were deployed Geoff's eyes would water when we talked about her. He gave me a shop vise once because I told him I was going to go buy one, said he had one too many. Turns out it had belonged to his father. It is bolted to my work bench and every time I use it Geoff pops in my head with that goofy grin. I love you brother and miss you immensely. See you back on the deck plates one day brother. Rest easy my friend your "Shipmates" have the watch.

To the children and family of Geoff: please accept my condolences for your loss. Geoff was such a generous and amazing person. Forever in debt for his service to our country. I haven’t seen Rachel in years (not since I took her, India, and my daughter, Remy, to see the Justin Bieber Movie!), but please know I am thinking of you and sending you much love!

I met Geoff in 1984 during my Sr. year in HS. We had the time of our lives together and then married in March of 1986. Geoff was such a happy guy with his piercing blue eyes and contagious smile. No matter where we were he was always well liked. He was proud of his accomplishments in the military and I was honored along with his late mother to pin his first wings to his uniform after he made chief. We had our first Child Katie Huk in 1988 and then another beautiful girl in 1991 Amanda Huk. Geoff was a proud father and his girls loved him very much. Good Memories will flood our hearts forever.
