Jerry was the first-born child of Floyd L. and Elsie A. Raines, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, on February 2, 1932. She was followed by a sister, Katherine (Kaye) in 1936. She grew up in Dell Rapids with her parents and her sister, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins also close by.
She was the valedictorian of her senior class at St. Mary’s High School, and after graduation, left for the St. Joseph School of Nursing at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, where she spent the next three years completing a program to earn her license as a Registered Nurse.
She moved to San Diego, California, in 1954, to join some of her nursing classmates, worked briefly at Mercy Hospital and then at Smith-Hanna Medical Clinic in North Park. She joined the nearby St. Patrick Catholic Church, and it was there she met Edwin G. Macy, and they married on May 4, 1957.
Three children soon followed, and she became a mother and homemaker for her family. There was nothing more precious or important to her than her family. For several years, as her parents aged, they spent a few months each year with her and the family to escape the cold winters. She remained a homemaker while the children were growing up, and when they were teenagers, she returned to work at Smith-Hanna Clinic as an RN.
In 1991, after Ed retired, they relocated to Borrego Springs, California. She became a volunteer at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and devoted many hours of her time to greet visitors to the park and work in the park library.
Over the years, Jerry made many friends. Her friends were always life-long friends. She maintained contact with people from all parts of her life. Her Christmas card list was considerable, and included relatives, friends and acquaintances from Dell Rapids, nursing school, clinic co-workers, and many other associations.
Jerry was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, and her beloved son Mark. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of nearly 61 years, Edwin, her children - Michael Macy and Julie Macy Kimball, son-in-law John Kimball; grandchildren Richard Kimball, Thomas Kimball, Sarah Kimball, Kayla Macy, and Bryce Macy; great-grandchildren Joel Fuentes, Lilia Fuentes, and Isaac Fuentes; and her nieces Christine Benzie and Stacey Nyman .
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 14, 2018, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 15546 Pomerado Road, Poway, CA 92064.
