GERMAN WILLIAM
Dec. 10, 1924 to Nov. 07, 2010[]
German W. Riquelme, a pioneer in the fields of drywall and youth league soccer, has passed on to the other world at the age of 85. He leaves behind his lovely wife of 55 years, Martha, a retired RN, and his three wonderful children, Ronnie, an independent contractor and eldest; Eddie, a writer and cyclist; his beautiful daughter Lydia, a travel consultant, and granddaughter Sara. He also leaves behind scores of friends and associates from throughout the region and from many walks of life.
A man of great conviction and force of personality, German was a trailblazer in the development of league soccer in the San Diego area. He received numerous awards and accolades for starting San Diego's first youth soccer league in the early 1960's. His legendary work in the field is a matter of record. German was also an avid traveler and consummate aficionado of professional soccer. Together with his wife Martha, German traveled throughout Europe and the Americas between 1970 and 1994, attending seven consecutive World Cup Soccer tournaments.
German was a wonderful husband, father, and friend. Those who knew him loved him. Born in Guatemala and raised in Argentina, German, as a young man, took his entrepreneurial spirit and drive and made a solo venture to the United States where he made a name for himself. He truly realized and lived the American dream. He will be missed.
May the LORD bless German W. Riquelme.
