Gilbert Katsugi Oshita of San Diego, California passed away peacefully at home November 14, 2020, after a long battle with cancer. He will be buried at Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, California.
Born in Ewa, Oahu, Hawaii December 28, 1933 to Hirosuke and Kozue Oshita, he spent his childhood around the sugar cane plantation where his parents worked. He told stories of witnessing the planes flying over his home to Pearl Harbor at the start of World War II. Gilbert enlisted in the US Air Force on December 4, 1951 shortly after graduating from Waipahu High School and served 24 years in the military, including two wars. He was honorably discharged on July 31, 1975. After retirement, Gilbert earned his Bachelor of Science in Business degree from Central State University while working at the US Postal Service. He worked at the Postal Service until his well deserved retirement.
He had a silly sense of humor, loved to watch documentaries, enjoyed OU football, was devoted to and proud of his family. He made sure he attended all major family events and activities until his illness took that ability away. A strong work ethic was engrained in his character and has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. Through example, he also passed down the principles of integrity, caring, and love as the measurement of a person’s worth rather than wealth, position or power.
Predeceased by his mother, Kozue Oshita and father, Hirosuke Oshita , brothers, Harry (Kay), Kenji (Hiroko), Ikuo (Jean) and Raymond Oshita (Florence). He is survived by his sister Helen Fujimoto (Gilbert).
Beloved and missed by his wife, Adelaida Oshita, daughter, Donna Masarik, son-in-law Ibrahim “Bryan” Masarik, grandson Darren Masarik, daughter Celia Oshita Solomon, son-in-law Mitch Solomon, granddaughter Mia Solomon White, grand son-in-law Zach White, granddaughter Ali Solomon, Florence, wife of brother Raymond, his many nieces, nephews, his dogs Milo and Chico and countless others he affected during his wonderful life. His legacy lives on through them.
The family is grateful to the hospice nurses at Vitas Hospice for their wonderful care. Most of all, the Solomon family would like to thank Donna and Ibraham “Bryan” Masarik for their tireless, loving care of dad and allowing him the ability to stay at home until his passing.
A viewing will be held December 2nd, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. with a funeral directly afterward from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at El Camino Memorial Sorrento Valley, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, California.
