Hannah Kinney, beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, died in San Diego at the age of 85. Born in Stockton in 1939, Hannah was the daughter of Andrew and Edna Armanino. Hannah was raised in a strong Catholic family, and she found joy in her faith her whole life. Hannah attended St. Mary’s High School (class of 1957) in Stockton, where she held various offices, including student body secretary, editor of the paper, and president of girls’ athletics. Hannah stayed just as busy in college at Sacramento State (Education, class of 1961), finding time to be the sophomore class treasurer, Junior prom princess, Panhellenic president, fraternity sweetheart, and editor of the yearbook.
Hannah met her husband, Will Kinney, at Sac State where he pitched for the baseball team, and she was the sports editor for the yearbook. The couple married in 1963 and moved to Escondido where Hannah taught 2nd grade.
Hannah and Will had four children: Shannon Rouiller (Michael), Erin Machado, Kerry Hornby (Russ), and Bill Kinney (Rebecca). Because Will was in the Marine Corps, the family moved a dozen times and lived in various places in California and Hawaii, including 29 Palms, Stockton, Oceanside, Pearl City, and San Diego. A devoted mother, Hannah made each new place into a home for her family.
After the military, the family settled in San Diego, where Hannah was active at All Hallows Church. Over the years, she spent countless hours volunteering at church including teaching catechism, counting offerings, quilting, secretarial work, and Eucharistic ministry at mass and to the homebound.
Hannah was happiest when she was with people. She loved to talk to people and learn all about them, and she wanted the best for others. She had a charming personality and made everyone feel welcomed like family. Hannah was a mother figure to many people, and she had many dear friends that she kept up with in person, over the phone, or through letters.
When her kids were old enough, Hannah started working at the University of San Diego, where she scheduled the students who worked in the computer lab. Despite knowing little about computers, Hannah enjoyed her time at USD, and especially loved interacting with the students, many of whom she stayed close to for the rest of her life.
Hannah and Will had eight grandchildren: Laura and Brent Rouiller, Katie and Sarah Machado, Tommy and Jacob Hornby, and Samantha and Tyler Kinney. Her grandkids have many fond memories of special family holidays with Nana. She loved to take the grandkids shopping and out to lunch and spent many hours playing Clue and cards with them over the years.
Hannah enjoyed sitting outside and reading books, gardening, doing jigsaw and sudoku puzzles, and rooting for her Padres.Hannah continued to find joy spending time with or chatting on the phone with friends and neighbors, who were very dear to her. She was a kind person who touched many lives and was loved and cherished by so many who knew her.
Last year, Hannah and Will celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Hannah passed away just four months after her husband; she is survived by her children and grandchildren and her brother Andrew Armanino (Tracy).
Services will be held at All Hallows Catholic Church in La Jolla, CA on Friday, October 4, with a rosary at 9:15 and a funeral mass at 9:30. A short service will also be held at Miramar National Cemetery the same day at 2:15.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hannah’s favorite charity, Father Joe’s Villages at 3350 E. St., San Diego, CA 92102.
