Helga Else Bencik nee Gürtler, of San Diego, California died Saturday January 12, 2013 at 12:25am at her home after a battle with liver cancer.
Born in Duesseldorf, Germany, May 24, 1935 to Johannes and Marianne Gürtler, she was the oldest daughter of two. Helga was a beloved wife and wonderful mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. She received an Associate of Arts degree in Computer Science and worked as a bookkeeper for Arrowhead General Insurance Agency for almost 20 years, and for Massachusetts Mutual Life. She was a constant volunteer with the Ladies’ Guild at St. Vincent de Paul.
In 1962 she married her husband Charles in Yokosuka, Japan. They had the amazing accomplishment of being married for 50 years. She took U. S. citizenship in 1965. Helga loved her family in San Diego and Germany and would visit her childhood homeland often. She loved to read and garden and travel.
Helga is preceded in death by her father Johannes Gürtler, her mother Marianne Gürtler nee Goetz, and her brother-in-law, Wilhelm Frohnhoff.
She is survived by her spouse, her 3 children: Martin, Thomas, and Victoria Beaton nee Bencik; her daughter-in-law Mary Bencik, son-in-law John Beaton, 5 grandchildren: Taylor and Trevor Bencik, and Luke, Kathleen, and Matthew Beaton; her sister Margret Frohnhoff, nee Gürtler; her nephews Stephan Frohnhoff and Uwe Frohnhoff, her brother-in-law Edward W. Bencik, and his daughter Rosemary, and grandchildren Jason and Elizabeth.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Catherine Laboure, 4124 Mt. Abraham Ave, San Diego, CA 92111 at 11:00 am on January 21, 2013
Interment of her cremated remains is to be at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122.
