I-Chien was born on February 2, 1928, in Shanghai, China. She was the second of fourteen children born to Guan Fu Shen and Cui Di Tang.
In 1948, she married Liang-Jen Chang, and the couple moved to Hong Kong the following year in 1949. A devoted wife and loving mother, her entire life was centered on making a wonderful and warm home for her family, establishing herself as a true matriarch. She and Liang-Jen were blessed with one child, their daughter, Vivienne Chang.
I-Chien relocated again in 1981, moving with her daughter to Honolulu, Hawaii, to help further Vivienne’s education. Her husband remained in Hong Kong to manage his expanding business but traveled back and forth several times each year. Her final move was to La Jolla, California, in 1992.
She was a great cook and loved hosting meals at home. In later years, when home-cooked meals became too tiring, she particularly enjoyed going out to eat with her friends. She also enjoyed walking her dogs by the beach, and shopping was another passion.
I-Chien is survived by her daughter, Vivienne Chang; her sister, Ye Kuen Sam; and her nephews, Tung Leung Foo (Johnson) and Chi Leung Foo (Michael).
Funeral service to be held at El Camino-Sorrento Valley, date to be provided.
A celebration of life will follow in January 2026.
