James Elwood Antrim, Jr. - AKA Churner, JA, Jim, Jimbo, Old Crow, Grandpa Jim, Uncle Jim, Pop, Dad, and many other nicknames that his family and friends used over the years, passed away in the comfort of his home surrounded by family on Saturday, June 11, 2022. He was 75.
Most of Jim’s life revolved around the ocean. Whether it was swimming, fishing, or surfing as a teenager off the coast of San Diego, he had a serious love for being in, and on, the sea. He was drafted and served his time in the Army in Vietnam, which left its lasting scars, but Jim, being Jim, found a way to surf while he was there. His passion for the ocean led him to an incredible 30-year career taking care of marine mammals at SeaWorld of San Diego.
His endless curiosity, coupled with his logical/scientific brain, made marine mammal research a perfect choice to pursue as a career that embraced his life-long passion with the ocean. He was the ultimate advocate for the proper care of these magnificent creatures which led to his vast travels throughout the world to share his expert knowledge with others.
SeaWorld is also where he met his best friend and eventual wife, Jennine Vincent Antrim. Jennine also grew up in San Diego as a fellow ocean lover. They even attended La Jolla High School at the same time, but their paths were destined to cross later on when they were both working at SeaWorld. Their shared love for all ocean-related things made them the perfect sea-soulmates. Jim loved Jennine to the end, when she died on April 11, 2021.
