My best memory of Sensei Iizumi is not of a throw but of a fall. I had fallen off of a large balance ball after standing up on it and after my back hit the mat I heard “good fall!” from Sensei Iizumi. He always had a genuine delight in all his students’ successes across all aspects of judo, whether it was a throw or a fall. It meant a lot to me as at the time I was receiving far more falls than making throws. It still means a lot to me to have had known his joy in judo. His memory will always be a blessing to me, and I hope that it is so to others as well.

One of my MMA fights. Sensei was in the crowd excited to watch. 

I met Iizumi sensei when I was a martial arts student at the International Self-Defense Centers in Poway. He was teaching judo to my class and I learned a lot from him. I liked his teaching style, which was very simple and direct. He explained judo moves in a way that was very practical and understandable. In addition, he taught me very good wisdom regarding life. He also told me to focus on school in addition to judo. I miss training with him. My deepest condolences go out to his family and may he Rest In Peace. 

Jin was a good man who lived an incredible life surrounded and blessed with a family who loved him.

From time-to-time , Jin would share many stories of his youth. They were filled with emotion and kept you on the edge of your seat and always ended up with putting a smile on your face. 

One such story was when he was chased through a rice field by an American fighter plane during World War II. Many years later he would have the opportunity to meet that very same pilot on much different grounds.

Everyone who really got to know him, appreciated him for who he was.
