Joan Juanita Hagain was born in San Rafael, California and grew up in San Rafael. She had 3 sisters and a brother. After meeting Frank "David" Chatfield, she moved around a bit as a Navy Wife -- they lived in Oklahoma, Japan, and finally settled in San Diego, CA. Joan spent most of her life in San Diego where she raised her children and worked as a law firm administrator.
After her first divorce, she single-handedly raised her daughters Kim and Hope, and her son Scott. Joan worked hard to provide for her family as a single mom, and watched her children develop into responsible adults with their own families. Throughout her life, she constantly demonstrated her devotion to her children, and she was especially close to Scott. She did re-marry briefly. Joan was a very independent, strong, and resilient woman. She charmed people all over San Diego with her sarcasm and blunt wit On the other hand, she was sweet, caring, and giving to anyone who needed help. And, she loved to help neighborhood dogs with treats when she would hang out at her son's jewelry store in University Heights, greeting customers with a smile and her numerous charms.
Between the law firm and Scott's jewelry store, Joan trained to teach computer classes at local San Diego schools for over 10 years, and she volunteered her time and money to charitable organizations like AmeriCorps and Wounded Warrior Project.
Aside for the admirable "mom stuff" Joan did tirelessly, she was quite adventurous... she went "snuba" diving in Hawaii, ATV riding on Maui and indoor skydiving in San Diego... just to name a few things. She was an avid reader and loved everything from biographies to classic literature. When she wasn't reading, she was watching classic movies like Pride & Prejudice, and the more recent The King's Speech. Joan was a history buff and loved watching TV shows and movies about the American Civil War, American History, and World History. She also had an interest in the UK's Royal Family.
Joan will be dearly missed by her family, her friends and neighbors. She is survived by her sisters Margaret and Jeanne; her daughters Hope Chatfield and Kim Hernandez; her son Scott Chatfield; her grandkids Nicole and Andrew Hernandez; grandkids Melissa Singer and Reuben Hendricks; her niece Jackie Mitchell and nephew Michael Strealy;
