Joaquin was born on February 01, 1934, on the island of Guam to the late Carmen San Nicolas. He was affectionally known in his home village of Agat as “Boy”. He attended school in Guam and graduated from George Washington High School in 1956.
Joaquin was married to the late Josefa “Pai” Tydingco San Nicolas for 66 years. He made many friends throughout his life and moved around the country with his wife and children while serving in the U.S. Navy. Joaquin and his family finally settled in San Diego after he retired from the Navy in 1977 after 20 years of service. He continued serving the U.S. by working in Civil Service for an additional 20 years.
Joaquin enjoyed going to the local casinos. He enjoyed taking care of his grandkids with Josefa. He loved attending parties and events with the local Chamorro community. He was a founding member of the Agat Social Club and a long time member of the Sons and Daughters of Guam Club. He enjoyed gardening for many years and took pride in growing tomatoes, zucchini, extremely hot peppers and tropical plants like bananas and taro. When his sons were younger, he liked to take them fishing.
Joaquin is survived by his children: Kenny (Norma), Bobbie Minton (Steve), John, Mike (Karla), Joyce Meshell and Ricky (Maritza).
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Nikki Minton-Saldana (Juan), Cari Minton-Aceves (David), Jon Minton (Stephanie), Alex Minton (Stephanie Miguel-Minton), Gaby and Junior, A.J., Brandi, and Joseph, Hayden Meshell (Megan) and Itati.
He is also survived by 10 great grandchildren: Connor, Jayde, Hunter, Grace, Gunnar, Bennett, Dawn, Emmett, Leo and Liam and a host of nephews and nieces.
