Dr. John Kenneth Agostino entered into eternal life on May 6, 2026, at the age of 80. He was born on December 18, 1945, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, the son of John N. Agostino and Rosalie Scaverelli.
John earned his medical degree from the University of Manitoba and then moved to California, where he completed his internship at USC/Los Angeles County Medical Center. He attended the Cleveland Clinic, where he served as a Fellow in graduate training in Internal Medicine. Dr. Agostino returned to San Diego to begin his practice in family medicine at the Del Mar Medical Clinic.
Dr. Agostino practiced medicine for 44 years at the Del Mar Medical Clinic and with Scripps Health in San Diego, caring for thousands of patients across generations of families.
John was deeply loved by his patients. He was known for carefully listening to their concerns, responding quickly with thoughtful solutions, and following through to ensure issues were fully addressed. When referrals were needed, he often called ahead personally to ensure his patients were seen without delay. He had a remarkable ability to remember personal details about his patients and their families, and he genuinely enjoyed asking about their lives and following up over the years. Many of his patients became his friends. His patients valued not only his exceptional clinical and diagnostic skills, but also the compassion, kindness, and personal attention that made them feel genuinely respected, and truly cared for by such a devoted physician.
John enjoyed teaching his two sons, John S. and Michael K. Agostino, how to ski, a tradition that created many lasting memories. He remained immensely proud of both of his sons throughout his life and found great joy in being a grandfather to Mason, Fletcher, and Henry Agostino.
A strong appreciation for music, theater, and community was central to John’s life. He was a season ticket holder for Broadway San Diego for more than 40 years and looked forward to attending musicals, classical concerts, and Concerts in the Park in Del Mar with friends. During racing season at the Del Mar Racetrack, Dr. Agostino also served as one of the physicians caring for jockeys, employees, and patrons. It was an honor for him to serve in this role within the community.
Deeply connected to his Canadian family and Italian heritage, John treasured time with his extended family, including many cousins. He had a close and special bond with his beloved sister, Joanne Marie Frisky. He especially looked forward to family gatherings with her, enjoying her incredible cooking, and spending time with his nephews Shawn and Kim Agostino, and Dr. Kevin and Natasha Agostino, and their families.
In his personal life, John shared a meaningful and lasting relationship with his wife, Anne Elizabeth Wick. Together they enjoyed watching college football, going dancing, attending San Diego Broadway musicals, classical concerts in La Jolla, traveling internationally, and spending time with family. They especially cherished celebrating life’s special occasions at The Lodge at Torrey Pines, where they first met. Above all, they simply loved being together, creating memories they both treasured.
John is survived by his wife, Anne Elizabeth Wick; his sons, John S. and Michael K. Agostino; his grandchildren, Mason, Fletcher, and Henry Agostino; the mother of his sons, Rae Rothschild; his beloved sister, Joanne Marie Frisky; his nephews Shawn Agostino and Dr. Kevin Agostino; and their families.
John’s legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched as a physician, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be remembered for his compassion, integrity, unwavering dedication to others, and the genuine interest he took in every person he met. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
