John was always a bright light - he had enthusiasm and energy in all that he did - and he did much. I will always remember his enduring love for his family and their pursuits in life. Those of us who knew John through the VF Corporation and Barbey Trusts know the great pride he had in the company which his father had founded, and his enduring engagement with the company. We remember his marvelous stories about his travels, his skiing, his reading, his love of the water and the boats which he loved to captain. John had a giant spirit and a giant heart. We will miss him very much.

My family has known John since we lived in Geneva Switzerland. We would go sailing with him. I was only 5 and 6 at the time but he and I met again in the mid 70s when I was in my early 20s and had my first post college job in San Diego. My father kept pestering me to contact him. I finally did and the result was a lasting relationship that included such fun times. Whether on the teak battleship deck or the yacht club sailing or anywhere in between he was always the host making sure there were always people to meet and things for me to do. I have never forgotten these times and often relate them to others. God bless John and the family JPK

John’s Spirit, Kindness and Enthusiasm for life set a high standard that will be sorely missed in the community, Watching him walk the beach and ride out to his yacht to sail set an example for continually embracing life. His advocacy for preserving the Jewel and its traditions, while providing modern facilities are gifts to the future. On a personal level his support to the Christmas Parade at a critical juncture kept the tradition alive and is only one example of his quiet generosity throughout the community, It was my privilege to have known him, albeit briefly.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our cousins for their loss. We wish them a peacefully transition during this time of morning and settlement of the family affairs.

Uncle John's comments at the family shareholders' meeting will be missed.

With love from,

Kelly, Dawn, Sonia, Glyde, and Lucas
