

John Edward Bokosky, 71, a prominent and respected Ophthalmologist, passed away suddenly on October 22, 2025. John was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 14,1954, to Shirley and Robert Bokosky. He grew up in Park Ridge, Illinois and was Class of ‘72 from Maine South.
John graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1979 and came to San Diego for his internship at Scripps Mercy Hospital. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin, Madison followed by a Fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He was certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
John became a Junior Partner of San Diego Eye Care in 1984, buying the practice from Dr. Ralph Anderson when he retired. Renamed Eye Care of San Diego, he built it into the successful practice it is today. He was dedicated to giving people a better life through sight and he gave over 40 years to serving his patients.
John was the Medical Director of the San Diego Eye Bank and served on the Board of Directors for over 40 years. He was a renowned Cornea Specialist, performing thousands of surgeries during his 45 year career as an eye surgeon.
John was an avid runner and was passionate about biking, skiing, and hiking. He enjoyed traveling and adventures with his wife Sara, weekends with his grandchildren, and trips to Chicago to visit his sister Karen and his old friends from Maine South.
John is survived by his wife Sara, his children Kelly Silva (Daniel) and Michael Bokosky, grandchildren Brynne, Lou and Dylan Silva, his sister Karen McLean, his nephew and nieces, and his faithful companion Mogley.
