John began his career in the Navy, serving as an Engineer aboard diesel submarines during the Vietnam War. He also served on Submarine Tenders as well as other naval ships. His dedication led to his retirement after 25 years as an E8 – Senior Chief Petty Officer. Following his Navy service, he continued his seafaring pursuits by joining the Merchant Marines stationed in Kwajalein/Port Hueneme and served on a Self Defense Testing ship as Chief Engineer.
Beyond his maritime endeavors, John was an avid Hot Rodder. From an early age, he reveled in the thrill of powerful cars. Over the years, he owned an impressive collection, including a Hemi ‘Cuda’, Chevelle SS 454, Firebirds, Camaros, Jaguars, multiple Corvettes and an Amphicar (amphibious car). Even at 83, he proudly drove a turbocharged Camaro with Lambo doors, a testament to his enduring love for speed and style.
John is survived by his wife Martina, and their children: Donna French of Tucson, Arizona; Tina Peru of San Diego, California; John Peru Jr. of Goodyear, Arizona; and Kimberly Peru of San Diego, California. His seven grandchildren and great-grandchild: Esmeralda, Michael, Tony, Giovanni, Breana, Eric, Liliana, and Jenny will carry forward his legacy.
To honor John’s life, visitation and services will be held on August 2, 2024, at El Cajon Mortuary (684 S. Mollison Ave., El Cajon, CA) from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Following the services, he will find his eternal rest at Miramar National Cemetery (5795 Nobel Dr., San Diego, CA) at 2:15 PM.
