Born on the island of Madeira, Portugal, Joe came to the United States when he was 15 years old, settling down in the Point Loma area of San Diego, CA. He attended Dana Junior High until leaving to go to sea on commercial tuna fishing vessels in his teens. A hard worker with a knack for the industry, he rose quickly through the ranks to become Captain of his first vessel, the Barbara K, in his early twenties. Joe spent more than 35 years at sea at the helm of several different boats.
He married the love of his life, Clara Maria Beeche, in 1974 in San Jose, Costa Rica. They settled down in San Diego, CA, having three children, and three grandchildren. A loving husband and father, Joe will be missed dearly by so many. He is survived by his wife Clara, his son Joseph and daughter-in-law Kristy (Ward), his daughter Stephanie and son-in-law James (Behan), his son Alberto, and his three grandchildren Liam, Annabelle, and Lala.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Cross Chapel at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 10th, followed by committal at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Joe Gois to the Alzheimer’s Association.
