Joseph Gilbert Van De Wiele passed away on the 24th of July. He was born on December 27, 1923, the second child of Louise and Gilbert Van De Wiele. Joe and his sister, Mary, were born and raised in St. Mary's, Kansas. Upon graduating from high school, Joe set out for the warmer weather of Southern California. He was involved with the NYA before being drafted into the Army Air Corps during World War II. During the war, he served in Anchorage, Alaska.
Following his discharge from the service, Joe worked as a metalsmith at North Island in Coronado and, ultimately, earned a supervisory position. He married Bettie June Delp and they had two sons, Mark Louis and Philip Joseph.
Joe was a lifelong learner with an analytic mind. He would much rather attempt to repair something than replace it. He embraced the computer age and delighted in the advancement of technology over his lifetime.
Joe will be missed by his family, friends and neighbors in the Clairemont community of San Diego.
