Joycelyn “Joyce” Pacheco Alfonso-Bautista, 53, passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024, surrounded by her college sweetheart and devoted husband of 26 years, Jay, and loving daughters who she adored beyond words, Mia and Ava. She will be dearly missed by her large circle of family and friends around the world.
Joyce was born in San Diego County, the daughter of the late Reynaldo and Erlinda Alfonso and sister of Reynold (Lani) Alfonso and Jackie (Dave) Houck. She was a graduate of Montgomery High School before entering San Diego State University (SDSU) to study accounting. While at SDSU, she joined the business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, where she developed valuable networking and leadership skills and participated in philanthropic opportunities. She was also active in AB Samahan, which promoted Filipino cultural awareness and service to the community. She served as the group’s Treasurer and performed several Filipino dances in Samahan’s annual Cultural Night. After graduating with her Bachelor of Science in 1993, she maintained the close friendships developed at these organizations.
Joyce was a licensed Certified Public Accountant with over 20 years of corporate accounting experience in the biotech, satellite manufacturing, environmental consulting, laser manufacturing and consumer goods industries. She spent 17 years of her career with ASML/Cymer as a Senior Revenue Recognition Analyst and Senior International Accountant. With ASML, she directly supported the regions of China, Singapore, and the Netherlands. She was well respected and admired by not only the staff in those countries, but in ASML’s foreign regions of Japan, Korea, and Taiwan as well. She left ASML in 2021 to pursue an opportunity with WD40 as a member of their international accounting team.
Joyce’s vibrant spirit radiated through every moment spent with her cherished family. She was happiest supporting her children and delighting in their milestones, whether at sporting events, competitions, or most importantly, graduating from college at SJSU and UCI respectively. Joyce poured her heart and soul into nurturing her children, imparting not just values, morals, and lessons, but a profound sense of love and wisdom that will forever shape their lives.
Joyce took immense pride in supporting her community. She was often a room parent at the kids’ elementary/middle schools and team mom when they cheered, danced, played softball, volleyball and track. No one screamed louder than Joyce! Joyce helped form a Girl Scouts troop, so that Ava could practice socialization with her troop members. Girls ended up learning valuable leadership skills thanks to her tutelage for many years. Joyce was also determined to give back to the autism community that helped her family tremendously. She created large teams for over ten years for the NFAR Race for Autism, which funded local autism initiatives. You might have seen her interviewed on the local news many times during the events. She was eventually asked to be a Board Member for NFAR and served as their accountant for several years. Joyce was a devout Catholic who taught faith formation, served as a married couple guest speaker at confirmation retreats, served in the Lector Ministry at her parish, St. Mark’s, and helped lead blood drives along with the Knights of Columbus.
Joyce’s heart overflowed with joy during family trips all over, but Hawaii had the most special place in her heart. She loved hosting lively and loud parties at home and enveloping all with the warmth of holiday gatherings. Joyce was recruited often by others to help them decorate for parties, because of her sense of style and creativity. If you were lucky enough to be gifted a box of homemade scones or cookies, know that she put a lot of love in perfecting that recipe! She loved to stay physically active, but her biggest passion was for hot yoga. She practiced for over 10 years and loved the stress reduction and the improvement in strength and flexibility that she gained from it. Additionally, she ran and walked many 5Ks and half marathons, even joining the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training program to raise awareness and money for blood cancer patients.
Those fortunate enough to know Joyce will forever cherish her compassion, wisdom, and unwavering love. Her legacy of kindness and dedication lives on through her family and friends. The world is dimmer without her light and perfect smile, yet her spirit remains eternally in our hearts.
Family and friends may visit from 4 pm to 8 pm, Wednesday, July 24, 2024, and Thursday, July 25, 2024 at El Camino Memorial in Sorrento Valley.
Mass will be held at 10am. Friday, July 26, 2024, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church followed by Burial at 12pm at El Camino Memorial – Sorrento Valley.
In honor of Joyce's enduring spirit and dedication to supporting others, the Bautista family kindly requests that memorial tributes be made in Honor of Joyce Alfonso-Bautista to the Discovery Fund for Cancer Research at UC San Diego. Your donations will continue Joyce's legacy of fighting for a cure.
