Ken was born on September 17, 1947 in Blackwell, Oklahoma and lived most of his life in Colorado and Seattle, working for ALSCO before retiring in sunny San Diego.
Ken proudly served in the United States Marine Corps (USMC) as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic during the Vietnam War and participated in the Tet Offensive in 1968 and other various operations, serving his country with honor.
Ken’s love of the outdoors allowed him to live a full and active life with his family and friends, especially at his cabin in Scofield, UT. He was always finding a way to be in nature whether it was running, golfing, skiing or fishing. His one true passion was cycling. During his 40-year cycling journey, Ken meticulously tracked his mileage and surpassed over 250,000 miles in the saddle. Many years he did not own a car and cycled everywhere.
Ken shared his cycling passion with hundreds of people. Everywhere he lived, he was an active member of the cycling community and organized daily group rides. He volunteered to lead over 100 week-long bicycle tours for Heartcycle and Cascade Bicycle Clubs, guided by a strong philosophy that bicycle touring should be affordable and accessible to everyone. In recognition of his service, Ken received the Distinguished Service Award from Heartcycle in 2024.
Ken and his wife Becky traveled throughout the US and the world together, riding bikes in France, Spain, Vietnam, and Canada. He especially loved cycling the San Juan Islands and San Juan Mountains. He loved a challenge of a long steep climb, an exhilarating descent, or a beautiful scenic pedal along the ocean.
Ken was preceded in death by his mother Olive, father Ken, sister Shirley and grandson Matthew.
Ken is survived by his loving wife, Becky Bottino; his children Troy, Brian (Dana), Jessica, Russell (Kelly); stepdaughter Andrea (Chris); and sister Cyndi.
He is also survived by his grandkids Doug (Mandy), Lexi (Ethan), Josh (Tatiana), Maria (Chandler), Haley, Colton, Avery and Chase, as well as great-grandkids Weylen and Elijah.
