Kirk will be remembered for his towering presence, both in height and in spirit. His loud, unmistakable voice carried as much warmth as it did strength, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. To his brother Brett, he was never just “Kirk”, he was “Biggums” or just “Big,” a nickname that stuck because even though he was the younger brother, he was always bigger and taller.
As a kid, Kirk could often be found running through the canyons, climbing, exploring, and doing all the “boy things” with sticks, rocks, and endless imagination. His adventurous spirit carried through into adulthood, where he found joy in the ocean, spending countless days surfing with his brother and surfing buddies in PB and all along the California coast. In nearly every photo, Kirk could be found flashing his signature shaka sign — a reflection of his easygoing nature and love for the surf.
Kirk spent many years working in the meat department at Henry’s, where his nieces would often stop by while grocery shopping just to visit with him. Those moments of laughter and connection are cherished memories that his family holds close.
Kirk was also a devoted NASCAR fan. He rarely missed a race on TV and was always cheering for his favorites, Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson, with the same enthusiasm he brought to everything in life.
A lifelong animal lover, Kirk especially adored dogs and horses. He had a special fondness for paint horses and shared his life with several loyal canine companions. He is preceded in death by his beloved dogs Bandit, Recon, Cochise, & Cheyenne.
Kirk is also preceded in death by his parents, Colleen Hoppe and Lee Hoppe. His ashes will be interred in a niche alongside his mother at El Camino Memorial in Sorrento Valley.
He is survived by his brother, Brett Hoppe, and Brett’s wife, Angelina; his nieces, Erica Dabbs, Kayla Locher, Cassandra Sims, Kimberly Jimenez, & Andrea Brancaccio, his great niece Emma, and great nephews Troy & Merrett. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew and loved him.
Kirk lived life large and loud; from canyon trails to ocean waves, from cheering at races to caring for his animals. His shaka will forever ride the waves, his voice will echo in memory, and his spirit will remain with all who loved him.
