"Kit " Catherine Elizabeth Schmersal
July 25, 1920 – February 27, 2018
“Kit” Schmersal (Catherine) July 25, 1920-Feb. 27, 2018 At the age of 97 , in the dawns early morning of Feb, 27, 2018, Kit took her final breath of earthly air and was welcomed home into her eternal heavenly life. She was finally home with her beloved husband, Whitey, ( married for 64 years ) …..along with her many brothers and sisters who had passed before her. In the last 6 months , Kit could be heard saying “I’ve had a good life and I’m ready to go and now a new journey has begun for her. She exemplified a life well lived, enriching the lives of all who knew her and expressing gratitude for all of the blessings this life offered to her. Her legacy is that she never realized the profound effect she had on others. She was a friend to all she met, leaving no one a stranger. Kit was one of those with a “bigger than life” personalities, with a sense of humor, wit and easy going way that people were naturally drawn to. Coming from a strong Irish heritage, Kit was a great story teller, enjoyed a good joke and spent many an hour playing Canasta with family and friends. Laughter was a key ingredient in her life…she spread laughter wherever she went and was always ready for a party. She lit up the world around her and boy, could she make us laugh. Kit was born in Long Island NY and the youngest of 10 children of the McKenna clan. She has many nieces and nephews that are still in New York which she always kept in contact and near to her heart. Kit was blessed with four wonderful sons: Bob Schmersal (wife, Irma), Tom Schmersal , Mark Schmersal, and Jack Schmersal (wife Susan; 10 -grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Kit was definitely the Matriarch of the family. She was an amazing wife and mother and loyal friend to all who knew her. God and her family were most important to her. She was a lady of faith and was always ready to help others. There will be a Celebration of Life to be held at Ascension Catholic Church , Thursday, Mar. 22, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. 11292 Clairmont Mesa Blvd. San Diego CA 92124 She had two favorite songs: “ New York, New York”, and “You Are My Sunshine” And she truly was the “Sunshine “ of all our lives. We will miss you Mom, Grandma and Friend. May you rest and peace in Gods loving embrace.

Mark, Jack, Tom, and Bob, I am sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. She must have had to been a very special person to have brought up the four of you. I member your mom and dad at softball games, they were very nice people. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow.

Kit will forever hold a special place in my heart. She was a kind, loving, and full of life person. I met Kit through my mom, at the pool. I have such great memories of Kit playing with my kids in the pool; tossing them, splashing and laughing with them, treating them as her own, making them feel special. If Kit was around, there was happiness, laughter and love.
We remained close throughout the years. I loved seeing Kit out walking, on her bike, enjoying life to the fullest, no matter what. The last few years, my friend and I would visit Kit and have “Happy Hour”. Kit would treat us to snacks and a glass of wine, and best of all, her company. We would sit and laugh, feel loved, and enjoy life; Happiness, laughter, and love. We were blessed to know Kit.
