Dr. Lui will be deeply missed. I still remember vividly when I arrived San Diego for my grad school,  with little knowledge about the program, I arranged a meeting with Dr. Lui for advice. He gladly welcomed me in his office during summer, gave me great guidance on both study and life. These kind of supports continued through my school years till I graduated. He's kind, genuine, sharp and wise. Such a great human being and a teacher. I will miss you Dr. Lui.

Dr Lui was one of my favorite teachers at SDSU. I'll always remember the first class I had with him as he made it a point to make sure he knew everyone's names. He went through all of our names, over and over again, until he knew everyone's in the class. By the end of it, we were all smiling thanks to his infectious laughter. 

Throughout the semester he was patient with all of us, always available to help, and always making making us smile.

Even when the class had long been over and I would occasionally run into him: he still remembered my name.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Prof. Lui’s passing. He was one of the faculty members on my PhD committee 5 years ago. I will never forget his supportive attitude, and his smile that was always so bright and friendly. He respected each individual, regardless of their background or status. He had a natural flair for mentorship, ceaselessly nurturing, encouraging, and bringing out the very best in students. I remember how responsive he always was to my emails and questions, and will never forget how he paid attention to the details because he truly cared. My sincere sympathy and condolences to his family and friends. You will be missed. R.I.P K.J.

It is very sad to hear that we lose Dr. Lui forever. Dr Lui is a brilliant statistician and researcher. From every talk with him, I could feel his strong enthusiastic in his research work. He is also a  very nice and kind teacher. He would like to help students and very happy to see any improvements and progress we made. Being one of his students and his teaching assistant, I feel very honored.  His kind smile really impressed me, and his encouraging words are always stimulating me to work hard and make progress. 
I will remember your kindness forever. Hopefully heaven knows no pain. R.I.P

Professor Lui,

Was well known for his efforts of instilling engagement within the classroom. He was a professor that truly cared about his students. He not only made math  an enjoyable experience, but did it all with a smile.  His contagious laugh and smile will be something I will never forget. SDSU may have lost a remarkable teacher, but his story lives on with his students. Thank you Professor Lui—the OG!

In my memory, KJ has always been a kind senior person.  I still remember that shortly after I accepted the job offer from SDSU, KJ invited me to have lunch at the Jasmine Restaurant on Convoy Street.  He was the first person at SDSU who extended a welcome hand to me.   During my conversation with KJ,  I started to develop my perception of KJ. This perception has been enhanced over the years by my further interactions with him. He is a hard-working researcher, a dedicated husband, a good father and a friendly colleague.   He enjoys life. I remember he often drove from San Diego to LA for dim sum.  He made sure that his CALPERS retirement has survivor rights for his wife.  He made sure all his kids are well taken care of.  When he visited Taiwan, he stayed in hotels because he did not want to trouble his relatives for hosting his visits.  He has left over 100 publications of which most are single-authored by him.   KJ is truly a stellar example of a model professor.  He will be remembered by his family, colleagues and friends.  Rest in Peace, KJ!

I am so sorry to hear of Professor Liu's passing.  He was a wonderful professor who cared about his students. He punctuated lessons with interesting anecdotes and funny commentary. We ran into each other at Daiso once where he caught my attention by clearing his throat and smiling at me. I will always remember his kindness and am grateful to have learned from him. 

I was saddened to hear about Dr. Lui’s passing. Dr. Lui was one of my favorite professors at SDSU. He taught us 670B. I remember on our first day he lamented that this was a difficult course, but if we paid attention we would survive it. He would always try and remember everyone’s name, and he succeeded. If someone missed class, he would make sure that they got notes from someone else. He was very funny. He kept us involved and engaged. He told us anecdotes, my favorite was about his first job. His affection for his family was apparent. 
He was a lovely human being and he will be sorely missed. My sincere condolences to his family and everyone who knew him.

While I was in graduate program at SDSU 6 years ago, I took his class only twice.  His big unforgettable smile, his high pitch passionate voice are still branded  in my memory.  During the summer, I planned get-together with my classmates at my place. We decided to invite our favorite professor Dr.Lui.  He brought his beautiful wife with him and we all savored our time with them.  He will be missed but will stay in our memory forever.  

This is heartbreaking.  KJ Lui was my Professor in the late 90's. I learned a lot from him: theoretical statistics, biostatistics, and survival analysis, among other topics. Some of the concepts he taught us, greatly helped me during my PhD work. I will miss him, as he was a genuinely caring and brilliant scholar. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.  

I am so saddened to hear of Dr. Lui's passing. I was lucky enough to have Dr. Lui for four classes during my first year of grad school at SDSU, so he left a big impact on me. Not only was he brilliant, but he was so enthusiastic about teaching. I can still hear him teaching us about "the trick! the trick!" in 670. I loved that he always made a point to learn everyone's name in class--I think that says a lot about the type of professor and person he was.

Dr. Lui is the last professor that in my academic life at University. He is also one of the best teachers I've ever known during my life. His passion and attitude on statistics encouraged us to resume our hard work.
He has such a young and interesting soul and I can't believe that he just  passed away so soon.

During our nearly 15 years together on the SDSU faculty, I appreciated KJ’s collegiality, positive energy, and dedication to both his scholarship and his students.  His professional achievements brought KJ personal recognition and reflected credit to the university.  On a personal note, more than 20 years ago KJ attended a party at our new home in San Diego and presented us with the housewarming gift of a beautifully painted ceramic cat.  Today that cat still sits on our fireplace hearth and reminds me of the kind and generous soul I had the privilege to know as a colleague and friend.  My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones at this sad and difficult time.

I shall remember most KJ's infectious smile and upbeat attitude.  Always a joyous "Hello!  How are you doing?" when you met him in the halls, big smile and bounce in his step.  He had a passion for biostatistics, and cared deeply for his students.  He will be sorely missed around the Department. 
My memory: a number of years back we gave KJ I think some zoo passes, or something of the like.  KJ was never one to put someone out, insisting to pay us back with a lunch.  Finally we gave in and he took us to Shogun restuarant, a Japanese style BBQ.  All I remember is KJ reveling in the onion volcano and bursts of fire the cook put on display.  A kid at heart!  You left us too soon KJ.

Dr. Lui was my masters' thesis advisor. I also took 3 graduate classes under him. He is one of my all time favorite teachers. Last year he even gave me some valuable recommendations. I am very sad to hear this. He must have touched many lives throughout his career.
We lost a gem of a person. My condolences to his family.

A lot of good memories from his classes. He dedicated a lot of energy and high quality teaching at all time for his classes. I was always amazed that he can spend a lot of energy for a class.  For one semester,  I had the honor of serving him as a TA.
 It's hard and heartbreaking to believe not being able to see him again.

There are no words to express the pain and shock we feel to lose our dearest uncle. 

We will never forget the wonderful times we spent together. Our trip to Las Vegas and all the fun family gatherings with you in Taiwan, Atlanta, and California are some of the happiest memories we have and we will cherish them for the rest of our lives. You are always so kind and caring. Even when we were studying in New York away from home, you would always call to check if we were well. Thank you so much for looking after us. You continue to live in our hearts. We will remember your smile, kindness, and compassion. We miss you dearly.

Professor Lui is an amiable teacher with great personality. he always creates a class environment of happiness, excitement, and acceptance. Gone but not forgotten, rest in peace and I will never forget you.

It is truly sadden to hear that my beloved friend and brother, KJ, passed away last Sunday. It is truly a lost to all of us: He is scholastic,  fair, and kind.  We will miss him forever.  

I have great association with him since I joined SDSU. We eat many lunches together and discussed research and something together.  He is always enthusiastic and optimistic.  He is always energetic and helpful.  This is the way he treats everybody, all his friends. KJ's spirit will be with us forever.

Dr. Lui was a truly kind and generous person who touched not only his students, but also everyone around him.
