With deep sadness, the family of Larry Wayne Palmer shares that he passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer on September 12, 2026, surrounded by his family and just days before his 76th birthday. Born in Astoria, Oregon to the late Leo and Gladys Palmer, Larry moved to San Diego with his family when he was 2 and spent the rest of his life proudly calling San Diego home.
Larry graduated from Hoover High School where he was on the swim and dive team. He graduated from San Diego State University and remained a proud Aztec throughout his life. At just 13 years old, Larry began working at a local butcher shop in Allied Gardens, beginning a 30-plus-year career in the grocery business, bringing lifelong friendships and honing a strong work ethic. He later joined his father as a Certified Financial Planner with Ameritas and 20/20 Financial Advisers, where he continued for more than 30 years of helping multiple generations of clients. One of his greatest professional joys was bringing his daughter, Deanne, into the business as a third-generation CFP®.
Larry lived a full and active life. He loved the ocean and surfing, was an avid golfer and skier, had a passion for travel and history, and was a consistent fan of the Padres and Chargers. He enjoyed old country music, collecting rare coins, was a dedicated gardener and never missed playing an April Fool's joke. He loved to cook, grill, and host Sunday family dinners with everyone gathered around the table. He supported local community charities including the Allied Gardens Summer Concert series.
Larry was known for his genuine interest in people. He was the world’s best listener- always willing to sit down and make someone feel heard. His quiet presence, kindness, wisdom, high morals and ethics, and ultimately love for others made people feel comfortable and cared for.
Larry’s greatest love was his family. His wife, Kim, was the love of his life. Together they shared almost 50 years together, 46 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family traditions, travel adventures, holidays and celebrations. Larry was incredibly proud of the family they created and being a husband, father, and grandfather was his greatest accomplishment. Larry adored his five children, Jeremy (Carrie), Deanne (Alex), Matthew (Melissa), Jesse (Yolanda), and Janelle (Nick), and took immense pride in each of them. His grandchildren Robert, Charlie, Coralie, Leo, and Stetson brought him so much joy and they loved their Papa. He treasured his time with them and the special memories they created together. Larry is also survived by his sister, Linda, and cousins with whom he shared close relationships.
Larry faced his battle with cancer with courage and strength. Through it all, his love for Kim, his children, and his grandchildren remained at the center of his life. Larry will be remembered for his sparkling blue eyes, his gentle and caring nature, his ability to truly listen, and most of all, the love he gave so generously. He was deeply loved, and he is deeply missed.
