Surrounded by her fellow sisters in prayer at her bedside, Sr. Leonor went peacefully to the house of the Lord on Friday, June 19, 2015. After entering the religious life with the Sister Servants of the Blessed Sacrament (SJS initials in Spanish) in 1957 at the age of 23, Sr. Leonor served as a SJS sister for the remaining 58 years of her life. The congregation’s charism is the adoration of the Holy Eucharist with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother and the education of children and youth in Catholic schools. Sister was 81 years old when she passed.
Sr. Leonor was born in Autlan, Jalisco, Mexico on March 15, 1934. The second oldest of nine children, she is survived by four siblings. She attended a boarding school run by another religious community from the age of six. By the age of nine, she knew she wanted to become a sister. Sr. Leonor obtained a BA in Education and a teaching certificate from the Normal School for Teachers in Guadalajara, Mexico. She earned a BA in Liberal Arts from the University of San Diego after coming to the United States in 1959.
Sister was a gifted teacher whose passion was teaching kindergarten although she also taught second grade, middle school and even served as principal throughout her ministry. She connected with her youngest students with ease and this is where she was happiest, spending most of her years teaching kindergarten in various schools throughout California. She also taught Catechism classes during her career. For the past five years, Sr. Leonor enjoyed serving as a volunteer at St. Kieran’s Catholic School in El Cajon. She beamed while reading books to the children in their library and there was a mutual admiration that was apparent to all present.
Sr. Leonor will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, devotion to her ministry and passion for helping her young students get a solid start in school. She was very giving of herself and loved living as a sister in community. She will be missed but never forgotten. Blessed be God!
Blessed are those who died in the Lord; let them rest from their labors for their good deeds go with them.
Eternal rest grant Sister Leonor, O Lord.
May she rest in peace. Amen.
May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
