The eldest child of Calixta Geraldo and Bienvenido Viloria Mamasig, Ligaya Geraldo Mamasig was born in San Jose, Urdaneta, Pangasinan, Philippines.
After graduating from Philippine Normal University, Ligaya began her career as an elementary school teacher. In 1965, Ligaya married Eduardo Mondala Mejia and together they built a life filled with love and a growing family. Their journey took them from the Philippines to Honolulu, Hawaii where they welcomed two sons. Their family eventually found its roots in San Diego, California, where they celebrated the birth of their third son.
A pillar of strength, Ligaya shouldered the family responsibilities while Eduardo proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. Despite her immense dedication to her family, Ligaya never lost sight of her own passions including volunteering at her children's elementary school library, nurturing a thriving vegetable and flower garden, and baking tasty treats like banana bread and brownies.
As her sons grew, Ligaya entered a new chapter in her professional life and joined the National Pen Company where she earned the title of supervisor. Later, she took a position in the daycare center at a local gym and then ultimately retired to focus on the greatest joy of her later years - showering her grandchildren with love and devotion.
Ligaya was passionate about gardening and she and Eduardo would often spend all day together happily tending to their cherished collection of exotic plants. Ligaya was also a devoted Catholic and a true friend who helped anyone in need, whether it was volunteering with The Urdaneta Association of San Diego, offering refreshments to the trash collectors on hot days, or just extending a helping hand to friends, relatives, and neighbors. Ligaya welcomed all into her family and treated everyone as one of her own. Ligaya’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Ligaya is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Eduardo, three sons; Marc, Glenn, and Kevin, four grandchildren; Calista, Max, Sebastian, and Aleah, and her two remaining siblings; Apolinario and Elizabeth.
