Lorraine Elizabeth Beck

Lorraine Elizabeth Beck passed away on January 30 at her home in La Jolla, California, at age 82.

A woman of many dimensions, Lorraine was a devoted spouse, a loving mother of two, a nurse, a psychologist, a great friend, and a wonderful human being.

Lorraine was born in Queens, New York. She trained at Bellevue School of Nursing in lower Manhattan, where she earned her Registered Nursing degree. She graduated from Bellevue in 1963 and met her husband Bud, marrying in New York in 1965. The early years of their marriage took them from New York to Albany, Georgia, where daughter Kim was born; to Boston, Massachusetts, where son Jon was born; and on to La Jolla, California, where she lived the majority of her life.

Once settled in La Jolla, Lorraine completed her bachelor’s degree at SDSU, continuing to CSPP where she earned her Ph.D. in psychology in 1988. She practiced family psychotherapy in La Jolla for more than 20 years.

Lorraine was a vibrant, beautiful, strong, intelligent woman. She and her husband shared a deep love and mutual respect that evolved throughout their marriage of almost 60-years. She shared a never-ending mutual affection and love with her children, demonstrated by frequent calls, visits, and outings near and far. She treasured her lifetime friendships, enjoying long meals together sharing stories, laughter, and intimate conversation. She cared deeply for her creatures – a series of many dogs, cats, birds, and fish. And she will be best remembered for her giving nature – providing honest love, caring, kindness, listening, advising, talking, support, and soothing to family and friends alike.

Lorraine is survived by her husband Clyde (Bud) Beck Jr., MD, her children Kimberly Beck Rubio and Jon Beck, their spouses Joe Rubio and Renée Beck, and her sister Geraldine Kerr. She will be dearly missed.

A memorial mass will be given at Mary Star of the Sea Church in La Jolla at a future date.
