Marcia Joan Tyler Murphy, age 67, died on Wednesday January 13, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. She lived most of her life in Coronado where she attended both Sacred Heart School and Coronado public school. Marcia graduated from Coronado High School in 1971. She studied at San Diego State University and UC Santa Barbara.
Marcia moved to Washington DC in 1980 where she started a successful court reporting business. She met and married her husband John Murphy at St. Matthew’s Cathedral on September 11, 1993. Their son Jack was born there in 1994.
In 2002, they moved back to Coronado and lived next door to her mother and father Louise and Jack Tyler. Marcia felt especially blessed to get these specials years with all her family. It also gave her the opportunity to delve deeply into her passion for art.
Marcia was predeceased by her mother Louise Bull Tyler and is survived by her husband John Murphy, adored son John “Jack” Murphy Jr., and her sisters Laura, Shawn, Jackie, Tracy, her brother John and her stepfather Jack Tyler. She is also survived by her cousins Hanna Leigh, Mary and Ingall Bull. Marcia shared her early childhood years with her cousins and recalled these years as some of the happiest of her life. Marcia is also survived by, and was especially fond of, her nieces and nephews.
Marcia’s favorite things included art, reading, walking in Coronado, an annual family trip to Rockywold Deephaven Camps on Squam Lake in New Hampshire, and spending time with her beloved sister Jackie. She also cared deeply for her faithful friends. Marcia was a longtime friend of Bill Wilson and a member of the Westside Club in Georgetown. She loved deeply and epitomized the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson “It is not length of life, but depth of it”
Donations may be made, in her memory, to the San Diego Food Bank or to the American Cancer Society for pancreatic cancer research.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated by Father Murphy at Sacred Heart Church on January 16, 2021.
