Born on April 9, 1936, in the Philippines, Mario served over 20 years in the United States military and continued his dedication to public service as a civilian government employee. He was known for his humor, kindness, and loyalty as a devoted Padres fan. One of his cherished memories was meeting Tony Gwynn while working at San Diego State University.
Mario was a loving husband to his first wife, Yolanda Valencia, with whom he created a nurturing home, fostering many children and ultimately adopting their son, Troy. After Yolanda’s passing in 2008, Mario found companionship and support in his marriage to Illuminada Reyes-Sanchez Valencia. In his final moments, he was lovingly cared for by Illuminada and held by his son, Troy, who will soon welcome a son named after Mario.
Mario’s legacy will be honored at a funeral Mass on November 16, 2024, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, with a viewing at El Camino Memorial on November 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by his interment beside Yolanda at 1 p.m.
Mario’s family finds comfort in knowing that his spirit will live on through his loved ones.
