Maritz “Marty” D. Sutton, 72, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 in San Diego, California due to complications from multiple sclerosis.
Marty was born in Anthony, Kansas on October 20, 1946 to Bonnable and Maritz Sutton. His family moved to Denver during his childhood, graduated from South High School in 1964. He attended University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, graduating with a BA in History, 1969.
Marty became a junior high history teacher and principal in the Denver school district for several years prior to entering educational textbook publishing. In 1987, he moved to San Diego, CA, where he took a sales position with the Palmer Method book company. In 1988, he married Elizabeth “Pepper” (Mundell) of Long Beach, CA.
Marty had a successful career selling textbooks in southern California for McGraw Hill and Scholastic. Known around the San Diego area for his kindness and generosity, he continuously donated books to needy children, neighbors, and local fundraisers.
Active for many years at the Mission Hills United Church of Christ (MHUCC), he was involved in Esperanza, and happily ran numerous golf-related church fundraisers and other charitable events. Marty had a kind heart, a story for every occasion, and a natural ability to make strangers feel like friends, new friends feel like old friends, and old friends feel like family.
