February 18, 1948 – September 29, 2025
Marquetta Smith Adams, a devoted caregiver, beloved wife, and quiet force of compassion, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025. Her life was a testament to service, strength, and love—a legacy that continues to inspire all who knew her. Born at home in Shiloh, Marengo County, Alabama, on February 18, 1948, Marquetta entered the world with the help of midwives and the prayers of her family. She was the cherished daughter of James Ira Smith and Irene Bennett, and one of many siblings in a vibrant, deeply rooted family. Her collective siblings formed the tapestry of her early life, woven with laughter, resilience, and shared memories. Though she endured the loss of her father in 1962, her mother in 2020, and several siblings along the way, Marquetta remained a pillar of grace and strength for those around her. She graduated from high school and went on to dedicate her life to caregiving and child development. For over 20 years, she worked as a child care provider, nurturing young minds with patience and joy. Her heart for the elderly led her to serve in a convalescent home, offering comfort and dignity to those in their final chapters. Her compassion extended across borders—Marquetta also worked overseas at a Child Development Center, bringing her warmth and wisdom to children around the world. On February 15, 1993, she married Nathaniel Adams in San Diego County, California. Their union was one of mutual respect, enduring love, and shared purpose. Together, they created a home at 2686 Wardlow Avenue in San Diego. Marquetta’s spiritual foundation was deeply rooted in her church home—Shabach International Ministries, where she faithfully served and worshipped under the leadership of Pastor Netreia Carroll for over 25 years. Her walk with Christ was steady and sincere, and her faith was evident in the way she loved, listened, and lifted others. She was a strong stern woman whose life reflected grace, humility, and service. She is preceded in death by her parents, James Ira Smith and Irene Bennett; her siblings Martha Smith, Earnest Lee Smith, Thelma R. Williams, Abraham Smith, and others who have gone before her. She is survived by her devoted husband Nathaniel Adams; her beloved sons, Dwayne Adams and Nathaniel Adams Jr.; her sisters Dorothy Jean Smith, Dorothy Mae Smith, and Betty Rene Smith. And Brothers, Elbert Smith, Charlie Smith, Ira Lee Smith, Albert Smith, Simon Smith, and James Louis Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, and loved ones who will carry her memory forward. Her life was a quiet sermon—spoken not in words, but in acts of love. She gave generously, listened deeply, and loved fiercely. Her legacy is one of healing, nurturing, and faith. May she rest in eternal peace, and may her memory continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
