Mary Sumiko Fujimoto

Mary was born in San Diego on July 17, 1934, daughter of Otomatsu and Fumiko Yoshihara. She has an older sister, Skii (Hiroko) and a younger sister Grace (Kiyoye). The family moved to Colorado during Word War II and returned to their house on E Street in San Diego after the war. She attended Memorial Junior High School where she enjoyed performance classes such as drama and speech.

She graduated from San Diego High School, "The Gray Castle", in 1952. Her best friends included Mary Yanagihara and Helen Hosaka (Mukai).

She met Fusatoshi (Fusa) when she was in high school, they were married on March 7, 1953. She helped out at her parent's nursery in Chula Vista before and after the birth of Darlene. She graduated from the Broadway Beauty School in San Diego before she moved to San Francisco to be with Fusa while he attended pharmacy school. They returned to Ocean Beach after Fusa's graduation in 1956. They purchased their first house in Lemon Grove where they added Sharon and David to the family. They built their house and moved to Bonita in 1972, where she had land to grow her garden and plant fruit trees.

She began working at Edie Adams Salon in College Grove Shopping Center. Then in the early 80s she became the owner of Mary's Hair Designs in Lemon Grove, which she owned for over a decade. She enjoyed cooking, tennis and watching movies.

In 1992, Fusa passed away and her life was never the same. She enjoyed seeing her grandchildren, spent many hours working in her garden and time with friends at the casinos. She loved her dogs! Sumi and Goldie were her constant companions after Fusa's passing. She moved to Del Mar in 2010 to be closer to her daughter. She appreciated her friends and family who continued to visit her in her last few years. She passed peacefully in her sleep.

She is survived by her children Darlene (Eric), Sharon Hoberg (Jerome), David (America), and her grandchildren Nikole, and John.
