Mary Theresa HUMPHRIES
October 11, 1924 – May 31, 2019
Mary Teresa Humphries, a 60 year resident of the State College area, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Friday May 31st after a brief illness. She was 94 years old. She was born Mary Rechtsteiner in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 11th, 1924 to Rose and Carl Rechtsteiner . Her family moved to San Diego, where Mary graduated from Our Lady of Peace Academy. While attending a USO dance, she met the love of her life, William Humphries. Together they raised 8 children. Mary worked at John Muir Elementary School, then went on to become an employee of the San Diego Community College District. Mary spent many hours at Rolando Little League where her children played and her husband Bill coached. She was also a member of the Rolando Woman’s Club. A devout Roman Catholic, Mary was deeply involved at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, where she was a parishioner for 40. Upon their retirement in 1988, Mary and Bill enjoyed traveling together. They took memorable vacations together and Mary’s incredible memory, her attention to detail and love of people meant that she always had plenty of stories to tell upon their return. After Bill’s passing in 1992 Mary continued traveling the world, making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and a trip to Europe as well. Mary’s Faith was her bedrock. Her love of our Lord, Jesus Christ, encompassed every facet of her life. She was strong-willed and fiercely independent. All that met her would never forget her kindness and sincerity. And although her family admired her for her strength we will miss her wisdom and unconditional love. Mary was preceded in death by her husband William and her brother, Carl Rechtsteiner. She is survived by Gerald (Mary Beth) of Peoria Arizona, John (Kim) of Poway, Ca., James (Sharon) of Ada, Michigan, Joanne Krames (Bud) of Reva, Virginia, Patricia Groves (Jim) of San Diego, Richard (Karrie) of Rancho San Diego, Peggy Aiello (Paul) of La Mesa, and Susanne McBride (Pat) of Lakeside, 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. The Rite of Christian Burial will be performed on Wednesday, July 3rd, at 11:00, St. Martin of Tours Roman Catholic Church, 7710 El Cajon Blvd., La Mesa, Ca. In lieu of flowers the family asks that a donation in her name be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the American Heart Assoc., or Father Joe’s Village. ‘I Love You More!’
