

In her early teens she met and married Moses Spikes. To this union five children were born: Loretta, Doris, Leroy, Betty and Karel Ray. The family also included one stepdaughter, Maxine Simpson.
The family moved to San Diego, California in 1947. Soon after their arrival, they united with Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Dr. S.M. Lockridge.
She was a faithful member of Calvary until her health failed. Sunday school was a special ministry to her in the church.
Her first husband Moses and one daughter Doris preceded her in death.
In her eventful life she met Mr. Arthur Johnson. They joined in marriage in 1978. They had a rich life together and enjoyed camping and fishing for many years. Arthur continued to be by her side during her sickness until the Lord called her home on October 4, 2012.
Mattie loved gardening, and raising her vegetables which she shared with family and friends. A pleasant memory of those who knew her was when she grew a 47lb. and 36 inch watermelon.
Mattie was a kind-hearted person that loved people. Her hobbies were fishing, gardening and shopping.
Her mother and father Henry and Minnie Rogers, daughter Doris Jones, brothers L.C., Johnnie, Willie, Henry Jr., Eddie and Robert all preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish a well-spent life, her devoted husband Arthur of 34 years; brothers R.D. Rogers (wife Doris), Lester Rogers (wife Bertha) and Harvey Rogers all of San Diego, California; children Loretta High (husband James D.) of Spring Valley, Betty Thomas of Spring Valley, Leroy Spikes (wife Cyd) of Los Angeles, and Karel Ray Spikes of San Diego; her stepdaughter Maxine Simpson of San Diego and daughter-in-law Barbara Spikes of Los Angeles; ten grandchildren, five great- grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
